A Dawson
Consulting Group client recently saw a great job advertised in the classified ads. It fit
his background and career goals perfectly. It was the dream job he had been waiting for --
unfortunately, it was also a "blind ad." No company name, just a street address,
brief description of the company and that ideal job description with a request to forward
resume to Attn: HR. With today's job market he knew that his resume would end up in a
stack of several hundred resumes if he responded to Attn: HR as the ad suggested. Instead,
the candidate decided to prove himself to be a "one-percenter!" He immediately
went to work and pulled up a list of the described industry in the zip code area from
Career Search, an Internet driven database to which Dawson Consulting Group subscribes for
the benefit of their clients. As a double check he input the street address in Corporate
Affiliations (another excellent computerized database available through the Dawson &
Dawson career center) using the "keyword" feature.
Home run! Within minutes he had the company name, information on the organization and
the name of the hiring authority. The real excitement was in the reaction he received from
the hiring authority when contacted by him. The hiring authority's final comment when he
set up the interview was "You have the initiative we're looking for!" Result: A
potential job opportunity that otherwise might not have occurred.
You need not be blinded by blind ads again. If an ad contains only a P.O. Box with no
company name or street address, you may contact the Post Office which services the box. If
the box is held by a company or organization, the postal service will share the name of
the box holder. |
